can this mare be retrained

Question
Hi- we are trying out an older mare for 30 days for my lesson program- This is my first time even considering a "contest" horse for a potential lesson mount.
She was once a gentle quiet kids safe mount but the past 2 years they leased her to a kid for 4-H who messed her up (my opinion only) by running barrels and poles. This lovely, otherwise quiet on the ground mare got all revved up when she was introduced into the arena- it took much walking and slow reassurance to get her to finally walk off on a loose rein.

Am I wasting my time or should I just try what Ive been doing (slow, non hurried work-no running) and see if she is able to forget about her "life in the fast lane?"

Answer
Hi Beth,

Its always a good idea to try a horse out.  If the children you teach are younger, you would want a horse that is like a "babysitter".  If you have older teenagers helping you retrain a horse is a good way for them to learn how to.  What I would do is I would work with her for your left over time, if you don't see improvement within those days, I would consider getting another horse.  I think that most horses can be retrained, it is having and wanting to spend the energy.  I have a horse that came from a similar background and was very sensitive and spooky, now he is wonderful.  It sounds to me if she was once very quiet, I think that she probably would not have trouble learning again.  I hope I was able to help.  If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask! Thanks!
Kathryn :)
