Question
Hi back in may i bought a retired race horse, we've had our problems, but Tom as he now is known is lovely. my problem is he's scared of the dark.i know the life he has had. stables 24/7. first night we had him, he went through two lots of electric fencing and maded a right mess of himself. since that night he is stabled, 2 weeks later we had an other accident, so we moved yards. he's now in part livery from DIY, their horses are stabled at night 365 per year, it has its pro's and con's, i do like to do it my self, if he's late in and its dark, he's running about the field and running at the gate, getting himself all sweated up. if he will not go out at night, means that i can never move him to where he is out in the summer time at night, he is nasty to other horses, ok if i'm on his back, but on ground he will kick or bite them, he can be a moody throughbred. how can i help him

Answer
Hi Julie.
"Tom" was probably out much of the time before he was sold as a yearling. I'm a little confused why you didn't get him used to his new situation gradually if you thought he had always been stabled 24/7.It might be easier--not to mention safer for all the horses---to string up a couple lights in the paddock area.
You state he is a moody Thoroughbred and mean to other horses. This might just be his personality. Sounds like he has always been the leader of the pack. I don't know of any way to change this.
   Good luck with him!
