Question
Dear Brenda,
I have a 12 yr old q.h. mare that i've owned since the beginning of june. When i got her she hadn't been rode for about a year or more. She is doing ok under saddle but i am haveing trouble leading her. When i lead her away from the house she keep stopping and pulling against me. Then on the way back she crowds me and pulls hard. She rushes back home and runs over me, practically drags me back. She has a really storng head and i can't get her to give in to the halter's pressure. What can i do to help make leading her easier?

  thank you,
     erin corley

Answer
Try using a lead line with a chain that you can place over her nose when you need to restrain her and under her nose when you want to encourage movement.  Building trust is also a HUGE issue - she needs to WANT to go with you so make your relationship with her a positive one.  When you get to where you are going give her a treat and make that place a positive place to be - she needs to want to be with you more than she wants to be at the barn.  This takes time and patience and starts in the barn and pasture.  Don't put up with the crowding and dragging - you have your space and she has hers when she violates that push her away and make sure to praise good behavior.  There are several "training" halters on the market, but they can be harsh and should be used under the advice and supervision of an experienced trainer.

Hope this helps, - Brenda
