Question
hello Lyn. i am really getting confused how much amount of water should i add to make a perfect bran mash for my horse. can you please clear my doubt?

Answer
Rohit,

Since I don't know what you are putting in the mash it's a little hard for me to tell you how much water to add.  Bran isn't really terribly good for horses to begin with.  Read up on it on the Internet, they don't get a lot out of it.  It's one of those feel good things.  I mash my horses everyday but use beet pulp and alfalfa/timothy hay cubes as the basis for it so they are getting good quality fiber and is part of their forage for the day.  2 elderly, toothless ponies get mush 3 times a day of beet pulp/hay cubes/feed because that's all they can eat.

When adding water add some, stir it up, and look at the consistency.  It should be nice and moist without being watery and sloppy.  Horses will still eat it but make a real mess of everything.  I screw up sometimes adding water to my guys feeds at night and wind up with horses wearing some of their dinner all over their faces.  I have to wipe them off so I don't get slimed!  The amount of water will depend upon how much food you are using.  It takes some experimentation to figure it out.  Add water a little at a time, stir and keep doing until you have it the way you want it.  Mine I add water and have to let it sit to let the hay cubes and beet pulp soak it up which is why I sometimes add too much.  Too little I can add some before I feed when I stir the feeds up at night.  It's sort of like cooking, you just have to just work it out for yourself.
