stable walking

Question
I have recently acquired an ex-racehorse. He is 4 1/2 years. He has a wonderful nature, easy to work with, gentle nature. He is normaly very relaxed. His biggest problem is that he will walk circles in his stable. He did this at his previous yard as well. His current stable is a loose box, this means he can go in and out as he chooses. He will still walk into his stable, just to walk in circles. I need some advice on to stop this as I fear that it will affect his weight and muscle formation. I know that the more he does this it will become a habit and even more difficult to break.

Answer
Hello Samantha,

It is already a habit and is already difficult to break.  Pasture keep with a sun/wind shelter is the only remedy.  Take away the box, stall, or any small enclosure so that he has no place to "go into". Also place another horse in the pasture with him; one that he is congenial with.

It will affect weight and muscle formation.  You need to break this habit soon.  More work and less time alone will do wonders.

Happy riding,
Dorothy
