Question
Hi I just rescued a OTTB about a month ago and he seems to limp every now and then.  I had the farrier out and he did say he had an abcess and to soak it in bleach or bleach water...Is that a good idea over the salt.  I have had mares with bad feet and always soaking.  I know his heals were cut down for racing plates and his feet are tore up from stepping and kicking on them.  Should I buy some boots to put on his feet like the Easy boot?  I went out to see him today and he could barely walk to me.  I also know he has an issue with calcium deposits in his ankel.  Plz let me know what you think plz.

Answer
hi jennifer,
i would not soak it in bleac at all. bleach is to kill bacteria. if the abcess has not opend then i would soak it in warm water and epsom salt. he is used to shoes being on him so i would keep them on him. my OTTB has to have shoes or he gets too soar and cannot walk. his hoof may be ready for you shoer to come out and open it up to drain. call him out. but dont use bleach. it will tear up is hoof even more. as far as the calcium deposits in his ankel. i would consult a vet for good supplements and medicines for it.
