Question
i have my horse now for 4 years he is 14 years old, i have never had any behaviour problems with him, i ride him every saturday and sunday, and after riding he gets some spcial meal, the past few months when he see me he runs past me to his food bowl and stand there, when i saddle him up to ride he refuses to walk with me, you can even hit him with a small whip on his back, he just walks for a few meters and then want to turn back, i am too scared too hit him too hard because he might throw me off, can you please help, i never get to enjoy my horse anymore.

Answer
He's a smart horse!  He's got you figured out!  He has learned that when you come he gets a wonderful treat afterwards!  The special meal is a wonderful idea.  I don't recommend stopping that.  If you can try riding him on other days that he wouldn't get the extra meal.  Or try just giving him the special meal on Sundays only.  Typically when I do a bran mash meal for my horses I arrange to do it on days they don't work so that they are not associating the treat with working.  I do believe in positive reinforcement and treats, but one has to be careful not to allow the horse to learn that treats always occur after riding especially if he stops working for the treat!
