Russian Tortoise is missing his foot

Question
QUESTION: Hi there. I have a russian tortoise who lives in a rubbermaid container and i noticed last night that three of his toes and toe nails are completely torn out and i have no idea why.  His other foot looks very mangled as well.
We found a rat in our house a few days before I found him like this and i am wondering if that may have anything to do with it?

ANSWER: Hi Jamie,

Tortoises can wear their claws completely down if they spend much time on rough surfaces.  If what you see on your tortoise looks healed, it's either something like this or an old injury.  If you're seeing fresh injuries (raw skin, bleeding, oozing, etc.), then it very well could be caused by the rat.  Rats are very dangerous to tortoises and turtles.  If the injuries are fresh, you need to take your tortoise to a herp vet for treatment and antibiotics.  You'll also need to keep him on a clean substrate (newspaper) until healed, but make sure to give him extra soaks.  Tortoises take a long time to heal, and you don't want any infection to set in.  I hope he recovers well for you.

QUESTION: Thank you for all of your help.  I'm not sure how to tell if his foot infected though.  When you look at the area where the claws used to be, there isn't any fluid coming out of it but it is a little red and when i tried to clean it up I could tell it was really sensitive to him.  There hasn't been any oozing or puss though, and it seems like the one claw he has left is causing him more grief than help.

Answer
If it's just a little red then it's pretty minor and I would leave it alone (watch it, of course).  That sounds like it might have been from something in the enclosure--logs, rocks, something like that.  An injury from a rat would most likely be pretty extensive--possibly with bone exposed.  If you can post a clear picture here, I can take a look at it for you.
