Question

Fl. Cooter
I am new to Florida.  A turtle that I have identified as a cooter laid eggs in my front yard.  I would like to know how to help ensure that these eggs hatch.  Information on incubation period and if or when they hatch should I help them if need be find the creek behind my house that their mother came from.  I have pictures if ur interested.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Jeff,

I'm not really an aquatics expert, but I'll give you what information I can.  The best thing you can do is to leave the nest alone.  If you have predators in the area or people might disturb the nest, you can construct a barrier around it, but don't try to dig up the eggs.  Artificial incubation of eggs isn't impossible, but you need to know what you're doing and have the right equipment.  It's better if they can incubate in the ground, particularly since these are wild turtles.  I did some research and it appears that incubation can take anywhere from 70 days to 150 days depending on soil temperatures.  Obviously that's a pretty wide range, but being that temperatures are somewhat cooler now I'd opt for a longer incubation time.  The hatchlings should find the water instinctively, but some of the weaker ones may need help and it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out for predators.

If you need additional information or help, I'd contact your nearest herp society or rescue.  They would know the specifics for your area and could be a very good resource for you.
