Basking light and Turtle

Question
My turtle had fallen asleep under his basking light. When i came home i noticed he was all dried up. I immediately placed him in the water and he is perfectly fine and swimming around. I am a new pet owner and i own a Mississippi map turtle. I was wondering if this is common behavior or if this is something i should look out for.

It depends if a turtle is basking 24/7 without interference then it is something to worry about and is usually a sign of illness.

My turtles will sometimes bask for hours and hours.

Are you sure the basking area it getting hot enough? Should read around 90F if it is too cool it will sometimes cause them to bask longer than usual.
