Red Footed Tortoise not eating

Question
Hi, I have two Red Footed Tortoises and have for about two years now. They both have always been healthy and good eaters.  One is getting quite a bit bigger than the other and has a tendency to dominate the food and water bowl.  I decided to divide the two up and give the littler tortoise a better chance to fend for itself.  I believe I have all the living arrangements correct (light, temp, substraight, diet etc) as I haven't had any issues in the past.  However, now the little guys isn't eating and I'm worried. I read some reference to bubbles out of the nose and I did see this after I moved him to his own cage. He also had some runny stool appeared to be wet on his head, around his mouth, and on his front legs.  I'm worried about the little guy ........did I do something wrong?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Could you give me some more information?  I need to know what kind of enclosure you're using (type and size), the size of your tortoise, the basking/UVB bulbs you're using (brand), temperatures on warm and cool sides, type of substrate, and complete diet.  When I know more, I'll be able to help better.

Usually lack of appetite is due to temperatures too warm or cool, dehydration (substrate too dry), parasites, or actual illness.  Are you seeing bubbles frequently?  Any other RI symptoms such as wheezing, yawning/gaping, stretching the neck out in order to breathe, etc.?  Moving the tortoise to a new enclosure might be a little stressful, but not enough to make him sick.  On the other hand, if he was getting the short end of the stick on food and basking time, he might have been quite stressed for some time.  If you can post back with more information, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.  Please post a picture of the enclosure, too, if you can.  Thanks!
