Question
Hi, I have a backyard pond and I go to a local pond where I catch frogs and bring them back here for the summer. So I found this 1 frog with 1 back leg. It looks like something bit it off. I took him home and named him Rocky It hasn't grown back but the cut has healed and he has gotten bigger.I let my frogs go back to the pond I got them from so they can hibernate properly, but I really love Rocky and I want to be able to see him again. Over the winter I can't keep him in my backyard anymore. Is there anyway Rocky can live inside my house with out dying?? E-mail me back please!!

Answer
Your question was sent to the pool but I will answer it now.

It is nice to want to care for "Rocky", but even though he has a handicap, he might fare better on his own in the wild. Keeping wildlife for someone that does not know enough about the wildlife, usually ends up being fatal to the wildlife. If his missing leg makes him unable to swim straight, or get around very well, then he may need a habitat, but you should consult someone that has experience specifically in frog habitation for that.

I am not well versed in amphibians, so I suggest you do some websearching and find a forum with someone who actually keeps their frogs outside over winter and see what they do. If you live in the same area and your pond is deep enough, I see no reason why he can't hibernate there with a little preparation and guidance from someone experienced in frogs. This is ONLY if he cannot get along well on his own that I suggest you do this. Any other wildlife that was otherwise healthy, and I would tell you to let it go where you found it. A rehabilitator would be better to consult if he is wounded significantly.
