my son has just got a leopard gecko but he seems to be losing his color is this because he is getting ready to shed his skin

It could mean that he is getting ready to shed, if the skin is a white/grey/translucent looking. Then most likely.

If he just appears dull, you need to check for other signs of stress or illness.

But it is most likely shedding. It is a sign of growth and young geckos should be doing it about once a month sometimes more sometimes less.
