lighting for a beardie

Question
I know that the correct UV output is important, but I was wondering if the reptile bulbs are the only way to achieve this. I have a canopy fitted with 4x 96wt Power Compacts- they are 10000k and actinic(2 of each) Is this too much light, or the wrong spectrum?
Thanks for any input-

Answer
Hello Andrew,

Yes, specific UVB lights are the only way to get the correct UVB output.  Regular lights, no matter how "bright" they are or appear, they do not emit UVB wavelength.
The proper Kelvin output range for them is approximately 5-6500K.  That amount might be a bit high as you can over load them a bit much.  Natural sunlight at or around noon has approximately 6000K so it is best to keep them within those parameters.
If you want a great UVB light that puts out excellent UVB, UVA, & heat, try getting the Megaray mercury vapor bulb.  You can get it from:
www.reptileuv.com
Then, you can use a daylight bulb with a slighly lower K reading for him just to keep the tank nice & bright along with the Megaray.
There just is not a substitute for UVB lighting.  They will develop metabolic bone disease without it.
I hope this helps out.
