Question
Hello, one week ago my son was holding his lizard and tripped on the stairs. The lizard who is 7 mo old fell down the stairs. We called a breeder and a vet (doesn't specialize in lizards) and asked what we should do. Both places said leave him alone in his cage and let him recover. He has trauma to his lip and his eye. His bottom lid of one eye is bulging like it is pooled with blood. He won't eat. He has pooped though. He moves around. He is starting to open his eye. My questions is how long should we leave him to recover before we seek more vet help. He is not himself even though his lip has almost healed and he opens his eye now. He used to be pretty lively. Is he just hunkering down to heal himself. When do we intervene? Thank you.

Answer
Hunkering down to heal is natural for him to do.  He is hurting.  He really should be seen by a proper Reptile vet.  If you see blackened areas on his head (not counting his beard) that is bruising.  A proper reptile vet might have given him some metacam (like lizard Tylenol) for the ache.  But he really should be checked for damage.  www.arav.org has a member directory that you can access to find the nearest vet to you.
