hemp bedding

Question
Hello

I use all natural hemp bedding in my rabbits cage but I've seen him eating some of it, will this harm him?

Answer
Actually I must confess I've never heard of hemp bedding. However, I know that hemp doormats have been recommended as chew toys for rabbits, and I've not seen hemp on any "caution" lists of plants rabbits shouldn't eat. So I would say it's OK as long as he isn't eating vast quantities.

Do you feed hay? Fiber is very important to the rabbit diet. "Coastal" hay, timothy hay, orchard grass and oat straw are some of the hays that are recommended. If you haven't been feeding hay, please do start, and it's possible that the hemp eating will go down once he starts to fill up with hay. If he has hay available but doesn't eat much of it, you might try a different type. Oxbowhay.com sells many types (we've no financial relationship with them, but they've been selling rabbit supplies a long time). If you have feed stores locally you might try those for a cheaper alternative to pet supply stores.

Good luck to you both!
