hello again,

he has been pooping and eatting as well as drinking. I think maybe hes depressed he used to be sooo healthy he was the healthiest rabbit i've ever owned i don't know what happened we have woods in our back yard and he lives back there in a hutch so i'm thinking maybe he had a parisite. Do parisites just past through or should i still take him to the vet?!?! Thanks again  ~Ali~

hello,

i have a male mini lop chesnut agouti and he blew his coat about three days ago. HE HAS LOST SO MUCH WEIGHT WHAT CAN IT BE FROM?!!!!!? we have a female sitting right next to his cage can it be that he's depressed that he can't mate with her? asap please help me?

Ali...I've been away this weekend, Sorry this wasn't earlier. I agree you have a serious concern. An unusual and rapid weight loss usually means that there is some type of obstruction in his intestines..[possibly from a fur ball.)

Sort it this way...Is he still eating? I'd guess not. If not, take him to the vet. If he is eating, is his belly getting bloated? If so, take him to the vet. If he is eating, and not bloated, does he have diarrhea at all? If so, feed him hay or straw immediately and take him off food. If this doesn't help stop the diarrhea, take him to the vet. (If this should help, then about three days from now, resume feed, but only about 4 ounces a day...and no more.) Rapid weight loss is nothing to be trifled with. It could be a parasite issue, also, as occasionally rabbits may get worms or other unwanted guests. Piparizine, while not recommended for rabbits, works at low levels to kill parasites that can rob nutrients from the animal causing weight loss, but this is usually somewhat gradual. I applaude that you want to treat this yourself, but it may be to the point where you need to get a veterinarian to actually see him in person. Good luck!...Steve

Answer
Ali, it depends upon the parasite as to whether they pass through the rabbits digestive system. Usually they do NOT. Sounds like he is possibly wormy. Forget the part about him being depressed, as I really think this is more of a physical problem than a mental one. As a final call, if you really do feel he is worth the expense, take him to the vet. I'd like to hear the outcome if you should decide to take him to the vet.I also want to know what the issue is that is causing his weight loss. Sorry I couldn't help more. Steve
