Rabbit Seems Constantly Bored

Question
Dear Dr. Krempels,

About 2 months ago, I adopted this really adorable mini-lop from a shelter.  He's guestimated to be about 5 years old and was given a completely clean bill of health.  He seems to be completely health (clean fur, good poop, eats, drinks, digs, chews), but...  He just won't socialize with me at all.  When he's not in his cage, he runs to the same corner he always runs to and just sits there.  In his cage, he just sits there.  I've gotten him lots of toys, given him towels and boxes, gotten him things that jingle, things to crawl through...  I've tried to lie with him on the floor and give him (healthy, suggested) treats and nothing happens.  Please help!  I want him to be happy.  :(

Thanks,
Angelique

Answer
Dear Angelique,

Has your bunny been checked over for health problems?  This doesn't sound typical.  I know of rabbits who are not very sociable with humans, but they at least usually find ways to entertain themselves (even if by being destructive!).  For him to just sit around suggests that he is uncomfortable or unhappy for some reason--possibly physical pain.

Please read:

for starters.

If he's healthy, and even your rabbit-savvy vet gives him a clean bill of health (including a deep oral exam to check for molar spurs--a five year old lop is very likely to have those, and they can cause him to be miserable!), then it might be time to think about letting him choose a spayed mate from among the rescues at the foster home.  A bonded pair will usually be more active and playful, and having a pal might make him warm up to you more, too.

It's worth a try.

Hope this helps. Please write back if you have more questions.
