Question
I just got a new rabbit named mandy about a month ago, and she
was knd of skinny when we bought her but we fattened her up, but
i just noticed she was losing some hair on her ears.

What is it and what should i do?

Answer
It is possible she has fur or ear mites. Sometimes they can just wear off the fur on their ears, too, though. This is especially likely if the fur covering the ears was fine or thin to begin with. Check inside the ears to see if there are any crusty scabs or what might look like dirt in them. If there are, the rabbit has ear mites. The best approach is to get a mitacide to put in the ears, but mineral oil can be used to suffocate them. It is a lot more messy that way, and you have to wipe the oil out after a few minutes so that it doesn't sink too deeply into the ear canal. Depending on the treatment used, you will likely have to treat again in about a week. If you use a mitacide, follow the directions. If you use mineral oil, treat once a week for three weeks. This will kill the new mites that hatch, too.
