Question
Hi...I have a 6 month old male rabbit.I have had him since he was 9 weeks old,& I had him neutered at just over 4 months old, when he started to spray & get amourous with my foot. Not sure on his breed, but he is a chinchilla colour & was originally bred for the table..I live in Greece,so unfortunately I have to except this.He has the best of all worlds,he has a big section of the garden to bob in,in the evening he comes into the house (unless it's too hot for him) & he is fully house trained,at night he is in a big hutch on the balcony....He doesn't like being picked up much            which I don't mind, but he has become quite unloving & sulky. Before him we had a rabbit, who would come for snuggles when he wanted to,which luckily was quite often,he would also snuggle on the sofa like a cat.I know that each animal will have it's own personality.I am hoping it is just his 'adolesent' stage, but as he has been neutered I didn't think that he would get this stage. He is not at all aggresive, just a bit unloving & seemingly sulky..He wasn't always like it,I would say he has become like it more so since being neutered.Even though he is my rabbit,I do have children who would sit & pet him if he didn't bob off to chuck around our dvd collection...Can you give me a little advice please...In the garden he has made a little burrow under his shelter, that he sits in in the heat of the day,but although we can see him he is out of reach.I don't want to fill it in as he looks comfy down there, also as the day cools he bobs &  nibbles.quite happily..Sorry if I have rambled on a bit much....Thank you...

Answer
Even in America, a lot of rabbits are breed for eating or labs.  But they still make nice pets.

I'm surprised that he's that way after his neuter.  Usually the males calm down a bit, but unloving and sulky I've not heard of.

It is possible that he is hitting the adolescent "I'm a big boy now, I'm going out to explore and find interesting things to do" stage.  And that garden has to be grand for him.  My rabbits would be very jealous.  Right now, he may just want to spend time hanging out in the garden.

As you know, rabbits have different personalities.  And there is a school of thought that says rabbits true personalitites come out when they're 5-6 months of age.  It is possible that your rabbit may be one that is very particular when he wants human companionship.  He may also come back around when the garden isn't appealling anymore.  Is he sulky all the time or just around certain people, or when he's in his cage?  If there's any pattern to it, maybe that'll help identify the cause of his change in behavior.
Also, does it look like he tosses the DVDs because he's bored, unhappy, or maybe it's fun for him?  Maybe some toys for him might help channel that behavior.  Cardboard boxes, or some other toys may interest him more than your DVDs.

Rabbits do like to throw things around, even though you're in Greece, maybe you can find some toys familiar to those sold at this site: http://www.bunnybytes.com/cgi-bin/start.cgi

I know how difficult it can be to go from a loving rabbit to a more aloof rabbit.  I'm experiencing that myself currently.

I'm sorry, I don't have a very good answer for you, but it does sound like your bun has a very nice life, and that you're willing to accept him as he is.  Perhaps in time, he'll get bored with his garden and decide to hang out more with his people.
