Spot on eye

Question
Dear Lee,

I have a neutered 2 yr old rabbit who has always had allergies in his one eye as the vet told me. Recently I noticed a white spot on his eye- it looks to be inside of the eye. I took him to the vet and she said it is in fact inside of the eye, and she thinks it is an abcess. She gave me a week's supply of antibiotic shots on March 3 that I've been giving him every 12 hours. He is eating and drinking, perhaps a bit more lethargic but the spot has not gone away and now it appears his eye is tearing a bit. I'm wondering if you can shed any light on this subject if you've seen it before, and if it's abnormal that his eye hasn't gotten better yet, or if it takes time. Thank you for any help!

Answer
Hi,

I would ask the vet for a topical antibiotic as well, like chloramphenicol.  As it's tearing a bit, the surface might have a problem in it and the topical drops can help prevent anything from going wrong on the surface.  Why she didn't give you a non-injectable, oral antibiotic like baytril (enrofloxacin) I don't know, it would be less traumatic than injections.

The other thing it could be is a cataract or it could be a tumor.  I would definitely ask the vet for a consultation with a rabbit vet that has history or specializes in eye problems of rabbits.

And I would do it first thing Monday morning. You don't have a great deal of time to figure out what this is.
