Question
We have rescued a rabbit from a family whose children were tired of her.  In the last week or so, I have noticed that her nose is running, just a little.  Also when we got her, we noticed her ears were very rough, not soft like our other rabbit.  When I examined her today, her ears felt softer on the top part, but down inside, her ears are very crusty.  Is there anything I can do for her or does she need to see a vet.

Answer
Hi Lisa

I must inform you that it is in the rabbits best interest to get a health care check-up.  The ears you can help by placing a bit of mineral oil in them every few days.  She probably has ear mites and in a bad case will need a shot of ivermectin.  She could very well have snuffles which is a very serious infection that won't go away with out medication that is only available from a vet.

This rabbit is very lucky you took her when you did.  She was very obviously not well cared for.  It is just so sad but now you are going to get to experience how lovable rabbits can be.  When rabbits are "saved" so to speak they have a tendency to bond with their saviors and they will always appreciate you.

You also want to try to keep her away from your other rabbits until you get her checked out.  Both ear mites and snuffles and even colds are contagious to other rabbits.

Please let me know if you need anything else or help finding a vet.  Until you can get in if you use the mineral oil and a q-tip it will help her to feel a little bit better.

Thank you

Pam
