Bunny teeth

Question
I just recently rescued a new boy bunny who is about 11 months old.  (I lost my year and a half old beloved Baby Porkchop to a supposed Liver Lobe Torsion last October.)
As I was giving the new bun a once over (just to familiarize myself with his idiosyncrasies, natural lumps and bumps, etc.) I noticed that his two front top teeth and bottom teeth are completely the opposite of my female's.  Her top two front teeth have grown in front of her bottom two and his bottom two front teeth have grown up in front of his top two.  I plan to take him for a well bunny exam next week but was wondering if this is normal or some form of malocclusion?  He eats well, doesn't seem to have a problem with eating harder things versus soft things, chews on baskets, wood, etc. with appropriate vigor and doesn't drool excessively.  Is he just special but not special needs?

Thank you for your help!

Answer
Dear Thea,

Your new pal has an underbite, which is a type of malocclusion.  If the teeth meet correctly, they might still wear each other down. But it will be wise to keep an eye on them to be sure they don't develop overgrowth that needs to be filed.

Since he has an incisor malocclusion, it's probably also a good idea to have the molars checked regularly to be sure they don't develop spurs, which often happens to a bunny with a malocclusion.  It all depends on how the rest of the teeth are aligned.  He might have problems, or he might not.  You'll probably know more after his wellness exam and a few weeks with you.

Hope he'll be fine!
