QuestionMy white lop rabbit has been twitching its head and eyes since last night. He is trying to eat and can't because of the constant head twitching. His head is turning to left back and forth rapidly and so are his eyes. The twitching stopped for just a little while when he finally went to sleep. What's wrong? What are some home remedies I can do if any? I can't get him to the vet right now and I need some help immediately! Thanks.
AnswerDear Amanda,
Your bunny may have an incipient ear infection causing him to be dizzy and have nystagmus (the side-to-side movement of the eyes). There is nothing you can do at home to cure this. The bunny needs antibiotics from a good vet who is familiar with rabbits and their special needs.
Although your bunny's head might not be tilted, the same things that cause head tilt in rabbits can cause this head jerking and nystagmus. So please read these two articles for background, so you'll know what to ask the vet:
www.rabbit.org/health/tilt.html
and
www.bio.miami.edu/hare/tilt.html
You can find a rabbit vet here:
www.rabbit.org/vets
Please don't delay. A condition like this must be treated quickly, lest it become much worse. Please also see:
www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sickbun.html
for information on how to safely take his temperature. This can be very informative. But if you are not confident doing this, leave it to the vet.
I hope this helps.
