Question
about 5 to 6 days ago my female rabbit has been nest making in our patio in a very large cardboard box that she chewed her way through and brought materials in. i decided to put her alone in her cage separate from my male. in her cage i put a box she could crawl into with some newspaper and extra bedding. as soon as i put this in her cage she was busy at work again. she has two levels to her cage. the nest is on the bottom, i noticed that after she was down she just lies on the top shelf. theres also i alot of hair in the nest, no movement. i didn't want to touch her nest i read this isn't good to disturb it.
I also noticed shes not been going to the bath room in her litter box which is right across from her nest, instead shes been soiling on the top shelf were she always is. is it possible she gave birth already and wants nothing to do with them? or is it possible she hasn't given birth and doesn't want to soil the area? I'm confused i thought they pull hair 24 hours prior to birth, I'm aware this could be a phantom pregnancy too. but i just don't think she would neglect her young. when we first got our male he was really young and she made a nest for him and even sat on him like a hen.
Should i look in the nest? do they leave them alone after giving birth? I'm just scared to find dead babies. please help!

Answer
Hi, I don't think that her going to the bathroon in the top shelf is a problem I think it is just her not wanting to soild the area.  Different rabbits make nests at different times.  Some rabbits make their nests days before they give birth while otheres make their nests while they are in labor.  You should check on the babies. Gently lift up the top layer of fur and see if he babies are in there. Also look at their stomaches, if their ribs are sticking out further than their stomache then they are not being fed and if their stomaches are sticking out further than their ribs then they are beng fed.  Any other questions then let me know.  Thanks, Kiersten.
