house rabbit litter

Question
Hi we've just got a baby girl mini lop as a friend for our castrated dwarf male lop. Both are house bunnies. He has been kept on wood shavings and hay in his bed and litter tray. However, we want to to nuture the baby girl when she is old enough and I've heard shavings can effect liver function which causes problems with a general anaesthetic. Is there another litter you could recommend - I've seen 100% recycled paper cat litter and megazorb for horses but I want one that is 100% bunny safe and I'm not sure these are. Thanks emma

Answer
Dear Emma,

You're right:  wood shavings of any kind are not recommended as litter because they can affect both the liver and the lungs.  The safest and best litters we've found are the pelleted sawdust variety, such as Feline Pine or Aspen Fresh.  There are lots of brands available now.

We've used these for years with excellent results...and they make great compost, too!

Hope that helps.
