Question
hi there.we woke this morning to find our female bunny completly bald and by the afternoon she has had 7 babies.lucky i put more straw in this morning however they are not in a nest of fur as i covered it all with straw.had i known i would have cleaned them out ready.now the mummy does not seem at all interested in the young.i haven't touched them cause i understand she may eat them.i am worried for their saftey.will she feed them and will they be warm enough as it real wet and cold in norfolk at the moment.i have put in more straw and hay and they are covered with a waterproof cover.the male is seperate from them.please can you offer me some advice and how can i check them to see if they are still alive.thanks so much.

Answer
As long as she is used to you, just distract her with a treat and go ahead and check the babies over. Mother rabbits are not too particular about smell, and by the time she goes back in to feed they will have sifted through all the nest enough to smell like the nest again.

If the babies are strong and active, they are being fed. Babies fade very quickly if not fed at least once a day (once or twice a day is all a mother normally feeds). If they are not being fed, you can hold the mother in the box once or twice a day to let them nurse and fill up. It only takes a few minutes for them to get quite full, so keep an eye on them.

If you are very worried about them getting chilled, you can take the whole nest inside in a box. Take them to the mother and hold her in the box to nurse them once or twice a day. This also makes for very tame babies. :)
