Leaving bunny overnight

Question
Hi,
I have a house bunny that has free reign of our house. She is let out in the morning at lunch time all evening and nearly all the time at the weekend while we are not at home she has a large cage. I have to go to a family wedding which means she will be on her own from Friday afternoon to the early hours of Sunday morning. I have a friend coming over Saturday for 2 hours to change her water and feed her,let her have a run around and check her over. Will this be ok? I would normally have family to look after her for the whole time but they will all be with me. I feel awful leaving her on her own.Everyone keeps saying don't be stupid she will be fine shes just a rabbit but she is so much smarter than people imagine and she means the world to me.
Many thanks for any advice you can give me

Answer
Hi Suzie,

this is my own personal feeling here.  I probably would not let the person let her out.  Just feed her and change the water and pet her inside the cage.

The reasons are this: 1) your rabbit does not know this person very well.  2) I probably would not want a non-rabbit person handling her because they haven't learned how to handle them safely (it does take time to develop the ability to feel comfortable handlign them and being confident you can without accidentally hurting them or holding them too loose).  3) If the rabbit doesn't want to go back up, you don't want a relative stranger chasing them around the house trying to grab them and pick them up.
It's not fair to have this person have their 'trial by fire' when you are not around to make sure everything goes smooth.

Unless you have total confidence in this person and their abilities, I would just let them change the water and food and pet them in their house, but not let them out.  It is okay for her to be in her house for the day.  She will be that much happier when she sees you come home Sunday and let her out to play and be with you.  And you will probably see a very energetic bunny hopping around then!

You are totally justified in making sure your pet is safe and cared for properly.  I don't begrudge dog and cat owners who only want the best and safest care for their pets, either.  And you know first hand how delicate rabbits are in certain aspects.

Anyways that's my 2 cents.  Hope you have fun at the wedding.
