Question
I have 4 bunnies. 2 of them are in the same hutch. They both are females and they both like each other. They are a dutch and a mini rex. My rex is loosing hair from her waist, to her shoulders. At first, when I put them together, when one was in heat, they would try to hump each other. I know that's normal. But, now they don't do it (and I'm sure they are both does because both of them have been pregnant and had babies.)and the rex suddenly started loosing her hair. not all of it is gone. So at first, I thought it was my dutch trying to hump her and grabbing her fur to hold on. And ripping out the fur. But I never see them doing it anymore. Then, I read one of the questions and answers here (but it's not the same)and I think she is pulling it out. So I don't know. Should I buy a new hutch and separate them? Or what???????

Answer
Well here are some possibilites:
1.  this could be one of the big "molts" that rabbits periodically have.
2.  have you seen the rabbit pull her own fur out or do any extra scratching?  This could be either a health issue or a stress issue if there's been something extra stressful going on.
3.  perhaps over grooming by the other rabbit
4.  there are a variety of health issues that could be causing hair loss:
some possibilities are listed here  http://www.practical-pet-care.com/rabbit_question.php?ID=2.2006013112473246
and this site goes into further detail  http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/furloss.html

You can try separating the two and see if anything changes.  But you may want to take your rabbit to the vet first to rule out health issues.  Also, it may be less expensive then buying a new hutch and they can still be together.

If you don't have a vet, you can check out this site:
