Question
Hi!
Ok, Silver and Daisy are finally moved in together! They seemed great, so I
left them overnight, and this afternoon when I took them outside for a run
they still liked to be close together, so I'm taking that as a sign they are still
in love! So, now it's officially Mr. Silver and Mrs. Daisy! I just wanted to thank
you for all your advice :) However, I do have a couple questions:
1. How old will Daisy have to be before she can be spayed? (She's currently
2.5
months)
2. Silver was two pounds overweight (which is a lot for a little bunny!), and is
on a diet of 1/2 cup of pellets per day, and unlimited timothy hay of course.
Up to this point, he has already dropped one pound! Daisy is young and feels
a bit thin, I think, at 3.5 lbs. How can I accommodate their different feeding
needs?
Thanks again!
Kaela

Answer
Dear Kaela,

Congratulations!

Daisy can be spayed as young as 6 months, but as long as she's not aggressive or acting too crazy, I prefer to wait until 8-12 months, to be sure the estrogen has done its job in helping to form her skeleton.  Very early spays have been associated with osteoporosis, so if you can wait a bit, that might be better for her in the long run.

The second part is more tricky.  When you have two bunnies eating together, it's nearly impossible to withhold food from one and not the other.  You'll have to play it by ear, and maybe take Daisy aside to give her extra food while she's growing.  Once she's fully grown, both rabbits can do just fine on 1/4 cup of pellets a day as long as they have plenty of fresh grass hay and fresh salad.

Good luck!
