Rabbit recovering from femur surgery

Question
My rabbit had surgery 2 weeks ago for a broken femur. SHe is a Flemish Giant. Is doing well, but I notice that when she wants to move she has a very difficult time and doesn't seem to have any power in her front legs. Is this their natural physiological makeup - that the back legs have the power to move them. She is content to just lie still but I put her back in her cage with a grate as she would get sore from her urine just lying in it all night - was using carefree on top of a washable rug. She doesn't move to other positions.  Maybe I am just an anxious bunny grandma. Thanks for any insight. (I am asking you as my vet is away this weekend.)

Answer
Dear Jean,

Being so big, it might be difficult for your bunny to move effectively without the use of her hind leg.  Be sure whatever surface she's on provides her with LOTS of traction, as the worst enemy of a big rabbit is a smooth floor.

To keep her from getting urine burn or bed sores, I highly recommend the fantastic artificial fleece beds from Palace Pet:

Get the densest fleece, and maybe a couple so you can launder one while the other is under bunny's bum.

You might want to ask the vet about some pain medication, though you don't want her feeling so good that she actually hurts herself.  But a big bunny can develop other joint problems when compensating for an unusuable limb, so she may need a bit of extra help with anti-inflammatory drugs.

I hope she'll be fully recovered soon!
