Baby bunny with unusual anus

Question
Hello,

I am fostering a domestic baby bunny, approximately 6-weeks-old now.  She's been living at my house for 3 weeks.  She seems that her anus is quite dilated and it tends to leak a bit (some liquid, some jelly like substance).  It's not a great amount, just enough to make her groin, tail area and rear feet wet. I clean her underside with warm water every night to help keep her clean and dry.  Other than that, she poops and eats like a normal bunny, and is very active.  I've already taken her to a rabbit savvy vet, who has never seen this before (I seem to bring him the weird cases).  Do you have any idea what may be going on with her, what to do or what this may signify?  I'm a little concerned, since she will be up for adoption once she is spayed.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Dear Jody,

I haven't seen this before, but if she is leaking clear, jelly-like substance, then she has enteritis, and needs to be treated for that.  Please see:

If her anus seems enlarged or dilated, it could be part of the inflammatory process.  I wonder if a short course of anti-inflammatory (NSAID) meds might help.  But of prime importance is getting that mucus out of the picture, and her GI tract back to normal.

I hope this helps.
