Question
hi,i purchased a9wk old mini lop a few days ago and am feeding as instructed i.e egg cup of supa rabbit excel ,very small amount of spring greens and small slice of carrot twice daily and plenty of timothy hay ,at what age when do i increase the amounts of food?also,my last rabbit had to be put to sleep due to fly strike he had dental problems and even though i took him to vet a lot to have his fur shaved because of a sticky bottom he still got this, how can i prevent this horrific illness from happening to my new rabbit-do they generally keep themselves clean?

Answer
hello bev

you shouldn't be feeding your bunny veg yet as she is still very young. i would advice you to start feeding your veg when she is around 5/6 months when she can digest it better. in about 3-4 weeks i would start increasing the amount of food. hay is the most inportant part of a rabbits diet has make sure she has loads of this daily, at her age it will also fill her up much more.

flystrike is very very horrible for an owner to see their rabbits go through, it is more common in larger rabbits as it is more difficult for them to clean them selves. rabbits are very clean animals and keep themself clean very well and as you have a mini lop then it will be easier for her. however i still use a spray that i got from the pet shop just for extra protection. it works really well, have a look in your pet shop or vets for a spray.

hope this helps
