The Protocol for Baby Bunnies in case of Diarrhea

Question
Dear Dana,

I just read your answer to Karin in regards to her questions "treating bunny for coccidia" and I am a bit confused about the protocol.

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/squirts.pdf

I am wondering if you give all the medication you listed there. If so, it appears as if there are more than 10 if not more meds.  Have I understood it correctly?  Please clarify.  And is there a way you can help with dosages?

Thank you sooo much!!
Leila

Answer
Dear Leila,

As it does say in that article, the treatment is extremely aggressive.  But truly, if a baby rabbit or hare has true diarrhea, then the only outcome is usually death, and so I have found it necessary to use *all* the medications in that article.

In the times I've had to use this protocol, I have not had obvious side effects or interactions of the drugs, and the babies survived.  I have never had one survive if I did not use this protocol--and *especially* the (1)immodium, (2) ciprofloxacin and (3) subQ fluids.  If you want to be more conservative, then those are the three most critical things to use.

Since I'm not a vet, I should not post dosages publicly here.  But if you write to me privately, I will provide these for you.

Hope this helps.

Dana
