Rabbit skin disease

Question
My 7 year old Rex has developed a hard black lump on his back, less than .25 inches across (it sort of looks like a barnacle).  It doesn't appear to be painful.  My vet has just moved out of state and I am looking for a new one- I've called a couple that are nearby but they specialize in cats, dogs.  In the meantime I wanted to see if I could get any information on what this might be.

Answer
Dear Hannah,

Without seeing the lesion, I can't guess what it might be.  But if it's pigmented and rough-textured, it's something that should be looked at by a good vet in case it needs removal.  Rabbits can get melanomas, and if that's what this is, it should be removed soon, with good margins, to effect a good cure.

You can find a rabbit vet here:

Hope this helps.
