wild bunny w/ broken hind leg

Question
I have been taking care of this bunny for about 1month and when my friend was transfering him from one cage to another, he got his leg caught in the bars of the cage, before he could get to him to help; the bunny had jumped around and almost ripped it off. I cleaned the leg, put antibiotic ointment on and reset the bone and wrapped it to imobilize.I also gave him a tiny bit of baby tylenol. Did I do the right things and is there anything else I need to do for him?

Answer
Dear EdenMarie,

I would not have given him Tylenol, since human drugs can have bad side effects in other species.  But if you are sure you have properly set the bone and not wrapped it too tightly, I think you've done the best possible for emergency treatment.

I would still get this bunny to a good rabbit vet ASAP, though:

If the leg is shattered, it may need to be amputated.  And any broken bone can be a nidus for infection.  The vet may feel that antibiotics are warranted as a prophylactic.  The vet can also give rabbit-safe analgesia, such as meloxicam and/or tramadol.

I hope he will recover well.
