I have two questions about rabbit litters

22 10:09:17

Question
First question: Who determines number of babies the doe has.
Second question? How do I determine if the doe or buck isn't
good breeding quality?

Answer
Hello Angela!
well the answer as to who determines the # of kits are developed is not that simple. Both parents are equal in contributing to the sex and # of young.
The only way the tell if a rabbit is a good breeder is to breed them at least 3-4 times and take good notes on the results. I have been breeding Quality Show rabbits for over 30 years and have 1000s of notes on all my breedings. you need to keep track of things like:
1-gestation period ( how long she carried the kits)
2-How many she had.
3-how many lived/ died
4-the sex of each kit.
5- if the doe had the babies in the nest box or not.
6- if she did have them in the nest box did she pull lots of fur?
7- if she had them scattered she should be replaced ASAP!!!!!!!!!!
8-Did you breed prue breeds or cross breed?
9- do you breed for show or meat?
10- how much did the kits weight?
11- weigh them every 2 weeks and keep track.
12- if they are a marked breed how many are correctly marked? how many are not.
13-wean them at 6 weeks!
how much do they weigh at 6 weeks.
14-did the doe loose weight is she still healthy after you wean them.
these are some of the data you need to keep for 3-4 litters more is better, to make your own decision.
I have done this for 15 generations with my top show winners and I can pretty much tell what I am going to get with certain breedings.
It is a lot of work, but is is fun.
Good luck
Dan
