Question

broken blue chinchilla
Ok I have bred and raised french lops for quite a few year.
Right now I have a very nice french lop doe she was born June 22 2009 and I lost the whole litter (8) except her, mom was a first time mom.
the doe is almost 5 months old and she just weighs over 5 lbs what for a frenchies is very low my does that are a month older weigh over 8 lbs.
My feed is fresh and they get fed hay every day.
The only diffrence with the other does is that this doe is housed with a holland lop (same age), I have never seen them fighting and they love each other.
Any ideas what to do and let her gain weight????

Answer
Hi,

well, rabbits aren't generally done growing until they are a little over 1 year old.  I wouldn't worry about it too much.  At six months most rabbits can be just half the size they will finally end up at.  Further she may just be genetically smaller.  Five pounds is a great size for a lop especially if they like being held.

But I wouldn't be concerned about it as a problem.  Just make sure she's eating hay and up to one year, during the growing period of the first year, they can have alfalfa hay as well as timothy hay, and you can give 1/2 cup of pellets per day.  Exercising (being out and being able to run and play) will allow her to develop her muscles and weigh more.

You could always give her her own cage if you think the other rabbit is eating more and depriving her of food.  Or separate food bowls on opposite sides of the cage, if you don't want to separate them.
