Is printer ink safe for buns?

22 9:58:27

Question
My buns absolutely love to play in diggy boxes.  I work in an office and have access to tons of shredded computer paper.  The paper has been printed on by either laser printers or a dot matrix printer.  Would this be safe to make their diggy boxes with?  I have 3 boys - Oreo (4 years old), Fuzzy (2 1/2 years) & Happy (2 years)and none of them are big chewers but will sometimes nibble on the paper so I am not sure if it would be safe.  Thanks in advance for your response.

Answer
Dear Sue,

It really depends on the content of the ink, and I think there may be differences among brands.  If there are any heavy metals (which could be the case, particularly for certain colored inks), then you'd want to keep these away from your bunnies.

It might be safer to fill the boxes with clean, safe timothy hay or straw, which would provide them with as much fun for digging, but not present any toxic dangers.  That's what I'd do.  Better to err on the side of caution.

Hope that helps.
