Question
Hello!
So I have a two year old neutered male bunny, he's an indoor pet but has
access to our back deck and goes outside pretty often.  He's very healthy,
happy, and too cute.  He's a weirdo however.  If it's raining outside, he'll go
out on the deck (through a cat door) and sit in the rain, for hours.  I'll bring
him inside and dry him off, but usually he'll just go back outside.  He seems
to like it, or at least not mind it enough to be soaking wet.  He'll also go
outside for hours on end and just sit, usually in the cold, in these big pots of
soil we have on our deck from when we grew tomatoes over the summer.  He
goes on the deck and comes in as he pleases, I just think it's weird that he
chooses to go out in the rain, and to sit in the cold for long periods of time.
He's not overheated inside, and his demeanor has been the same since I got
him over a year ago... he's just weird!  He's very active, is extremely spoiled,
gets greens daily, and if he had his way would be petted 24/7.  Do you know
of rabbits that particularly enjoy the cold or rain?  I want to assume he just
likes to feel "wild" as an outdoors bunny, or is he just weird?

please let me know if you've got any ideas!
thanks!

Answer
Hi,

well, it's probably a number of things as to why he likes being out there.  Often you will see wild rabbits still grazing in a light rain.  Light rain doesn't always stop what they are doing.  If he's a rabbit that has regular length fur (not a rex/mini-rex) he gets a decent amount of protection from really getting soaked to his core.  I don't believe he'd let this happen as he knows he can always go back inside whenever he wants.

He probably enjoys the outdoor scents and smells too.  And watching what goes on outside as well.

Rabbits can handle cold (not wet to the core cold) but air temp cold, far better than heat.  So it isn't a surprise he can tolerate colder temps outside.

What you are seeing is his unique character here.  They are all individuals with unique likes and dislikes.  Many universal likes and dislikes among rabbits, but not in the same way, timing, method, etc.  Then they all have some things that set them apart from others.
