Question
Hi

I have just brought a breeding pair of dwarf lops about 3 days ago. He is 1 and she is 1.5, she already had 3 litters. it seems she have not mated for a while because she have got a roll of fur under her chin. The first night I put them in separate hutch, then the next morning I introduce them and the male is very keen to mount her, but she doesn't seem to be interested, she just lay down most of the time and let him mount her. I don't know whether they have mated. that night I put them back in their own hutch, but she looked a bit aggressive. Then the next morning I put them together again, and the same thing happened, she looks not interested in him at all. Should I wait and see whether she is pregnant later on then put them together again? can they still mate when she's laying down? next time should I keep them in separate cages for them to run about in the garden, so they can introduce to each other for a longer period before they mate again, will this help? She's quiet a dominate rabbit. I'm actually not sure whether she's actually 1.5 because her eyes looks quiet old to me, she have got big eyes, and they look like bulging out. How can you tell the age of a rabbit? How can I get her interested in him again?

Answer
hi lisa keep them seperated for about 2 weeks and if she starts to get aggressive towards you i think the mating will have worked -if after 14 days she is normal introduce the again and watch the mating.
the only real way to age a rabbit is to look at its teeth they will get tatartar on them as they grow old.
also her pads may be a bit worn if older.
