i know this may seem like an insane question! but my pet mice seem to have a cough is this possible? i don't want to take them to the vet in case he thinks im mad. i would be very grateful if you could get back to me.

I have seen mice sneeze, so I believe they can cough as well. Cedar shavings can cause respiratory infections in small animals, so use only pine shavings or other safe bedding materials.
I suggest cleaning the cage thoroughly; replace all the bedding and food. Most pet stores sell antibiotics for small animals, so try adding some to their water. If the mice continue to cough, sneeze, or have trouble breathing you may need to speak to a vet.
There are veterinarians who will treat small animals, like gerbils, mice, rats, and guinea pigs. You might have to speak to several vet clinics to find one. Use your local yellow pages and call, ask if they see small animals or can recommend someone who does.
