Question
QUESTION: Hello.

I had two male pet rats that came from the same litter. They were together since their birth. Sadly, today, I had to have one put to sleep due to illiness. I know it would be best to get new baby rats to help my now lone rat get better, but next year I'm moving away out of town and sadly I can't take him with me, so I'll have to give him up to someone. So I wonder what else should I do to avoid him falling into depression besides spending more time with him, cuddling him, spoiling him, etc..

Thanks for your time.

ANSWER: How old is this rat?

There are alternatives to getting babies; namely, an older rat of about his age (either spayed female or polite male). This would give him a buddy but not stick you with two new crazy babies. Really, it's an ideal situation for him in the long run. Then when he goes to his new home, they have a buddy for him already rather than having to A) introduce him to new rats or B) keep him by himself - which is sad and rather depressing.

Other than what you've already listed, there isn't a whole lot more to do about it. Rats grieve just like people.

QUESTION: My rat is 1 year and soon 3 months old. I would totally do that but.. Sadly, my dad, with who I live at the moment, doesn't want me to get any more pet. I do have two females of roughly the same age, but they aren't neutered. I would do it but the surgery is so expensive, I don't even have the money for it... Besides, my ressources for getting older rats is really limited, as I come from a small town and the only source of pets I can have is the local petshop. And, on top of that, I am not even sure I will be able to find him a suitable home when I'll have to move... I feel that my situation is like a dead end....

Answer
Well then the only thing you can do is keep him company as much as possible. I feel for you in your situation - I know you're just kinda stuck.

When you go to move; why can't you take them with you? (just curious - you can tell me to butt out :)) Also, whereabouts do you live? I may be able to narrow down a rat network in your area that could help you when the time comes.
