lice

Hi Sandra,
I just bought 2 new rats from the pet store last week. I know it's not the best place to buy them but it's my only option. I had them to the vet already for breathing issues and they are on meds but I forgot to mention lice. I had all 6 of my rats end up with lice before due to the 2 new rats from the petstore. I'm still keeping my 2 new ones separate but is there a way I can tell if the new ones have lice before I combine everyone?

P.S. I e-mailed the girl you told me about. The rat rescue girl from Newfoundland. Unfortunately she doesn't do it anymore but thanks again for trying.

Hi Michelle

Usually during quarantine, within the two week period is when the lice may show up since the eggs may take that long to hatch.
You can take a good look at their fur and check for nits. THe nits will be silver in color usually and attach on the strands of fur, the ends usually.  It looks like their fur was singed by fire....at least that is how it looks to me.  Weird way to describe it, I know.

THe lice themselves may be seen in the skin and fur.

I am itchy thinking about it now. ACK! You can ask the vet for some revolution to keep on hand just in case.  I would to be safe.
