Question
I live in Zimbabwe & have two female rats. The first rat, Priscilla, is queen of the cage, when I introduced the second rat, Sydney, Priscilla beat her up. Since then they have established a "pecking order" & get on really well now. My question is that they have both become rather unhandleable & enjoy each others company. What can I do to get either both or one of them to be tamer.

Answer
Please read over my website on taming rats that are shy or biters.

You need to set up an area for them to play in for starters so they dont have places to run and hide but feel secure at the same time.

On my site, in the GETTING STARTED page is a cardboard barrier you can make from cardboard boxes and use this to set up a play area.

Go over the instructions on how to get them to come out and how to handle them and in no time they will be sweet calm trusting girls for you. I used this method for training a wild rat and she was the sweetest rat after about a week of patience and lots of understanding.

Never let them know you may fear them if they bite and do not try to grab them and pick them up if they run. You will learn to get them to come when you call them.
