Me and Magenta
I just got a new fancy rat from a local PetCo after the passing of my 3 year old first fancy. My new girl, Magenta, has been sneezing a lot... and seemingly laborously. With Rosa, my first, she sneezed a bit the first few days I had her home but this passed and I was told when this started that it was nervousness and stress due to the move from litter and pet shop to my home and her new cage. With Magenta, I'm concerned. She seems lethargic, drinks constantly, and is sneezing red tinted mucos. Is this Myco? She is still young, so I didn't want to jump to that first... ALSO, I am in a VERY small town with only one vet who has no experience with exotics. Is there any advice you can give me? Thank you so much. Rats have been the best pets I have ever had and I would hate for Mage to be sick... she has helped me through my own illnesses lately.

AnswerWhere are you located in TN? I may be able to find someone for you. As for your girl, it does sound like a respiratory infection and although she is young, she can have mycoplasmosis that is causing the infection. She really needs antibiotics for a full 30 days and needs the right antibiotics, which would be baytril. We need to find a vet for you before this gets to become chronic. I hate to say it but PetCo doesnt sell the most healthy rats. They choose them from their feeder rats and sell them off as pet rats so they are not bred for health at all. Dont worry, we can nip this in the bud hopefully. I love the photo and would love to use it on my website if you dont mind. I will of course put your name and Magentas name.
