Sores on my rat

Question
I found some small scab like sores on my rat by his left ear. It started with one a week or two ago behind his ear. We had assumed he had just scratched himself too hard, now they go down his left side down to the middle of him. They appear to have bled. What could this be?

Answer
Dear Megan,

By far the most likely answer is mites, although there are many other possibilities. There are also other skin conditions; or it can be allergies.

The best thing to do is to go to the vet. The vet can examine the rat and  identify whether there is evidence of various issues. Then if you work with the vet and treat for any physical issues with no improvement, you can explore the idea of allergies.

You must find a vet who specializes in "exotics" or "pocket pets." Cat and dog vets do not know how to treat rats.

If you want to start the process without a vet appointment, see if you can just talk a vet into giving you a kitten supply of Revolution. (or cat, or puppy; just not dog). Or find a friend with a cat or puppy who has some around. This amazing stuff, with a couple of drops, kills anything that bites the rat for a month!

When you get the liquid, you will only use a small amount. He only needs 0.05 ml per pound, for which measurement you will need a syringe. You will part the fur at the back of his neck where it is hardest to reach. Drop the amount onto his skin and lightly dab to make sure it goes into the skin and not on the fur. Then don't let him wash himself for ten minutes while it soaks in.

If the problem is not solved, a vet appointment is best. If you have any other questions, please write back and I am sure I can help you out.

The best of luck and health to him.

Squeaks,

Natasha
