Female Rat Discharge

Question
Hi Janell,
I saw that you had asked a prior question regarding your female rat and some slightly smelly, light yellowish vaginal discharge. My rat is also about 2 and a half and is experiencing the same thing. She is not spayed, and has never been pregnant. I was wondering if you ended up consulting your vet about it, and if you did, what they ended up saying?
Unfortunately my vet is closed right now so I can't call or stop in.
As a side note, she has an infection in one of her hind feet and is currently on an antibiotic and a pain killer.
Thanks very much for your help!

Answer
I was probably asked that, but to be honest, I can't remember the outcome. Yellow discharge generally means infection which if she already has a staph infection (bumblefoot) in her feet may be from the same or it could be a myco-related infection (vaginal or uterine). What antibiotics is she on, and how long has she been on them? If its tetracycline, baytril, doxycycline or sulfa, it should make at least a dent in the discharge provided its infection related.

When the uterus is displaced/enlarged/otherwise abnormal, discharge is seen.. so if the antibiotics she's currently on aren't doing the trick, to me that indicates another problem that should be looked into further. Provided she's still eating/drinking/behaving normally, I'd say she's fine until after the holiday when your vet is open again, and just get her in as soon as ya can.

Good luck!
