Sick broken

Question
My hairless girl Strawberry appeared to have broken her leg/hip three weeks ago. I consulted my local vet who pretty much said there was going to be little she could do but to let her get plenty of cage rest and let it try to heal. I nervously did so and did not separate her from her cagemate pinklotie, a champagne furry girl. I did remove anything she might climb on or up that could possibly worsen things. Thing is, now i think i have a huge problem. Strawberry the hairless was a hyper but smaller cagemate. She was more dominant to a degree. She even barbered pink pretty extensively on one side of her head and face before this. They have always had issues with steeling food from each other but have always slept together and snuggled seemingly enjoying each other. Now..now i don't know what to do. I may have made a bad thing a horrible thing. First let me just say its been a nightmare as of late trying to care for my sick rattie with a houseful of sick children and adults with flu and strep throat for two weeks, and myself having flu and sinus infection and what turned into pneumonia for myself. Ive been terrified of transferring strep to my ratties and have limited all interaction down to nicessity and peeking in. Now i have big issues. Today i sanitized my hands, gave them food and water, and out of curiosity moved the bedding from around Strawberry that she had fluffed around her hairlessness and i about freaked. She is hunching over and sitting on her butt. it appears now that her back is now broken? she has no movement in either of her back legs and her back doesnt look right. She has lost alot of weight and almost keeping her eyes closed. She is however attempting to move herself around pulling with her front legs. It appears that Pink is sleeping ontop of her. Pink wouldnt let her have food, and stole it from her each time she got something today so i expect shes been doing this?. I think Pink is starving her to death? Like some sick twist of domination now? Did she break her back? Ugh. Now i dont know what to do, do i separate them and possibly have Strawberry go into depression, especially now after shes injured er wanting, or needing security? She was never a people rattie; opting to her PinkPink for cuddles and offection and never liking touches or petting like pink...pretty much being her polar opposite. She isnt squeeking out in pain when crawled on. It seems a dammed if i do dammed if i dont situation. I did make sure to push Pink away and get some food at her as well as get the water bottle right where she could get a good long drink while i held it there. I also got out the tube of nutrical which i had hoped i would never need for any of our pets and gave her some. Of course she hates it, and i had to smear abit on her in order to get her to take any of it.. and pink loves it..go figure..and was licking it off her and my fingers..ugh. So it seems Pink has gotten an ugly revenge to an extreme where as there used to be balance and i really didnt think this would be like this. They are both two years and a few months old. Pink being about four weeks older. They were both bought at four weeks and introduced and been together since i got them, never with any issues. Two peas in a pod. If her back is broken now, it spells the inevitable slow process. She doesnt seem to be in pain though, it looks more like a paralasis the way she drags and dubles herself over without it seeming to bother her.
I really really dont know what to do.
I'm going to clean out the aquarium today and maybe do a partial day in one cage, and partial in the aquarium maybe? that way theres more time to eat and drink with no interference but they can still have interaction? But i'm still fearful of moving her around alot and handling alot with the kids still being so ill as well as her back and me handling her wrong. I'm hoping Pink will snap out of it, but i know she may not..please if you can suggest anything..anything at all..Pink hates it when i take strawberry out of their cage even...
its a conundrum from hadees.

Now i'm taking chances with giving them strep. Weve used so much lysol and bleach we should have stock investment but we all keep getting/staying sick. This flu is almost worth keeping kids completely out of school and adults staying home permanently.
Ugh my poor strawbewwy :|

Answer
I'm so sorry for my delayed response!

Human strep is not the same as the zoonotic strep, and cannot be passed from people to rats - that's a myth, a holdover from the guinea pig world, and rats are much more hardy. Don't worry about getting them sick and hang out with them as much as you'd like. I'm terribly sorry to hear of Strawberry's back :( I've never seen a broken pelvis or back in a rat before, I can only assume that you're accurate in that assessment. Her sister, by sitting on her and stealing food, is probably not doing anything out of meanness, or spite - simply a turning of tides, just as feral and wild rats do, the strong survive and the weak, injured and sick die.. it's natural for Pink to show little emotion for her buddy at this point. I would try hand-feeding Strawberry soft, easy to eat foods (like canned cat/dog food, softened veggies and baby cereal/baby food) so that she doesn't have to take much effort to hold it, and can just eat it out of a bowl. If you can, correspond Strawberry's meal times with the time that Pink is getting out to play - that way Pink is distracted and isn't there to eat Strawberry's modified diet. I would avoid handling Strawberry to avoid any pain to her, and look into giving her some baby ibuprofen (ratguide.com has medication guides for over the counter pain medications safe for rats, it may help her considerably). Keep her water and food close and let her simply convalesce.

As for YOU guys! I really hope you're on the mend soon! Have you been tested for Type-A influenza? There's rumor in my circle that the Pneumovax may be of some help for the respiratory flu symptoms seen with H1N1. Stock up on vitamin C and keep your fluids going. I hope you all feel better soon, Strawberry included. :)

Best of Luck!
