Question
Hi Dianna,
I greatly appreciate your effort to volunteer advice to happless pet owners like me.
I will be totally honest with you,I love the Indian Ringneck, but knew nothing about it.
About a month ago I went to the bird market and purchased an IRN.I also purchased a cage twice its wingspan in size.Research on the internet revealed it to be a female. She does not sing nor make much noise, thrashes wildly when I try to come near her cage, schreeches & bites when I try holding her.She does not bite but tries to move away when I place my hand in her cage. She somehow escaped from her cage twice and settled on the ceiling fan.I had to use a long wooden pole with a soft duster tied to it to dislodge, corner and catch her with a towel.
She only loves bread, guavavas & apples. She is eating sunflower seeds, but not much else.
I have named her KRISH and she turns her head to the caller when called. Please help me tame Krish,as I want her to live free of her cage.
I have a family with 2 small kids. The kids love her but are afraid of her too,as my son was bitten on the finger as he was stroking the back of her head while I was putting her back in her cage after her first escape.
Krish could be 2-3 years of age and my guess is that she was cought wild.
   Plese help.
                       Thanking You,
                            Yours,
                            ROY

Answer
Hello Roy and thank you for your post.
The cage that you bought for your new friend sounds like it will be sufficient for her.
If she was caught wild, then you have a lot of work ahead of you.  The first thing that you'll want to do is to get her wings clipped.  This will give you a little more control and she'll settle down a bit. (Don't worry, her flight feathers will grow back.)
Next, cut back on her food a little bit.  This way you will be able to coax her to you.  It's going to take months to be able to do this, but you want her to build up a trust with you.
Do not put your hand in her cage.  This is her domain and she will be very territorial.
Once her wings are clipped, you can safely let her out of her cage and try to coax her with her treats. (However, I do not recomed sunflower seeds, they are loaded with fat and can cause some serious problems with her digestive tract and kidneys.)
Just keep working with her in this manner, and she'll soon enough start to trust you, but do not let your kids try to pet her.  If she was caught wild, she will always have a wild streak in her and she will be unpredictable.  Just keep talking to her in a calm, gentle, quiet voice.
To train her to "step up", try using a small perch first.  Have her step up onto it and gradually work your way to get her to step up onto your finger.
As I've said before, it's going to take a lot of time, up to several months, but it'll work.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer you.

Good luck and God Bless.
Dianna
